In 1977, the College's roots were established as Wasco Area Education Service District, and then Treaty Oak Education Service District. The College operated in leased facilities in downtown The Dalles for 16 years. In 1989, a vote of the people changed the College's designation from service district to community college, and later the name was changed to Columbia Gorge Community College. In 1993, a bond election allowed the purchase and remodeling of the current campus facility. In 2001, the citizens of Hood River and Wasco Counties voted to annex Hood River County into the college's district, allowing the college to increase its presence in the Hood River area.
As the college name has evolved, so have College operations, programs, and services. Today, Columbia Gorge Community College serves 5,800 individuals in its various programs - including college transfer, professional technical, basic skills development, business and industry training, and community education.
The College is an active participant in moving the community successfully into the 21st century through educational leadership, workforce training, economic development, and community partnerships.
