The West Bank Campus is the only public institution of higher learning west of the Mississippi River in the New Orleans area. The original site of the 13.7-acre Delgado West Bank Campus was acquired in 1967 as surplus U.S. Navy property in a cooperative endeavor with Touro Hospital, LSU Medical School, the Archdiocese of New Orleans and the Orleans Parish School Board. Isaac Delgado, the original benefactor of the College for whom the school was named, was a nineteenth century immigrant from Jamaica who became a wealthy New Orleans businessman and sugar planter. His philanthropies included the arts, medicine, and education. In September of 1921, Delgado Central Trades School opened its doors with a program of vocational trades for 1300 boys and young men. Today, Delgado Community College provides a learning centered environment in which to prepare students from diverse backgrounds to attain their educational, career, and personal goals, to think critically, to demonstrate leadership and to be productive and responsible citizens." Delgado Community College does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, gender, age, or qualified disability.
