Standardized tests are an important part of the college admission process; if you obtain high scores you will be able to get into a good college and maybe lead to thousands of dollars in a great scholarship.

The most important tests are the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test), ACT, GRE (Graduate Record Examination) and GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test). For applicants who donít have the English as first language, the TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language) is required.

Why these tests are so important?

Many people think that these tests are designed to measure studentís amount of knowledge, but it is not true. These exams are designed to measure studentís skills, the questions are not about historical facts or general knowledge, they are planned to evaluate your capacity to solve problems.

Many high schools donít have the same academic standards and colleges want to evaluate all the applicants on an equal level, standardized tests give colleges this facility and, as its name indicates, ďstandardizeĒ all the applicants.

SAT is the most widely taken college test, measures your level in math, vocabulary and reading comprehension. Math sections cover algebra, geometry, arithmetic, logical reasoning, probability and counting. Verbal sections cover analogies, sentence completions and critical reading. Experimental section is used by the test developer to try new questions, and is not scored.

ACT is a subject-based test with multiple-choice questions covering five areas: English, mathematics, reading, scientific reasoning and writing. In relation to writing, we must highlight the typing level. It may not seem like a big deal to you, but your typing skills may be placing you right out of an admission. Learn to type faster using online Typing Training Resources. Learning to become a better typist no longer requires that you enroll in tedious classes. Some students prefer to take de ACT because they are more comfortable answering questions knowledge-based.

The writing section isnít mandatory and consists of one essay question. You must declare your position about an issue and support it with good reasons and many details.

The test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is designed for students who are not native speakers of English and plan to study at colleges in the United States.
